The sky is blue, the sea is blue.

This is another large scale quilt from Kat of KoolKat which will be on display during her open studio on the Quilts, Stitches and Textiles Trail to be held during Carnival of Flowers in Toowoomba next month.

The quilt features our daughter and friend aged around 5 playing on a beach at Fraser Island.  Detailed quilting, applique, beads and shells complete this iconic scene.

What a site quilt in our exhibition next month.

“The salty sea, an ancient land, Port Arthur, Salamanca, The wharves, Tall ships and rigging, gateway to the Antarctic, the museums and art galleries, Hobart at the epicentre – what a site”.

This is Kat’s artists statement for her “What a Site” quilt for the inaugural Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery Art Quilt Prize.  The quilt won Viewer’s Choice. It is a wall hanging 160 x 165 cm and features a range of techniques such as discharge dyeing and free motion quilting, and is based on a Google earth image of the museum site.

The quilt will be on display during Carnival of Flowers week as part of the Quilts, Stitches and Textiles Trail.  More information on our home page at www.koolkatquilting.com

Quilt proves popular choice for Kathy Adams of KoolKat Quilting

This year’s Viewer’s Choice winner at Toowoomba Quilters Inc. annual quilt exhibition announced this week was a colourful art quilt marking part of Tasmania’s history.

Kathy Adams of KoolKat Quilting took out the award with her colourful quilt “What a site!”

The quilt was designed to celebrate the site of Tasmania’s Maritime Museum and Art Gallery at the Gallery’s inaugural quilt challenge and exhibition two years ago.

Kathy’s quilt won Viewer’s Choice on that occasion and her quilt has proved no less popular with local quilt enthusiasts during last month’s quilt show held at the Salo Centre, St Ursula’s College during Carnival of Flowers week.

Kathy described her inspiration for the quilt as “The salty sea, ancient land, Port Arthur, the incredible harbour with Hobart at the epicentre – in all, what a site!”

The quilt was made using hand-dyed silk and discharged dyed cotton fabric, along with Google Earth images, her own photos and constructed using machine and hand quilting.
