Starlight and damask quilting patterns, Kat’s Open Studio.

These are two of Hilda’s quilts from Mitchell.  The first is being quilted with the starlight e2e pattern and the second with the damask pattern. Below is a brace of embroiderers from Toowoomba visiting Kat’s Open Studio today

Open Studio starts Friday

The quilt below comes from Hayley of Warrnambool, Victoria, and is being quilted with the budget leaf meander pattern.  The bottom quilt was delivered by Margot from Blackall who is visiting Toowoomba for the Carnival of Flowers.  The quilt will be ready for pickup tomorrow, and is being quilted with the dragonflies pattern.

Butterfly quilt feature of Open Studio next week.

Kat’s Bali Butterfly pattern has been the most popular of her commercial quilt patterns.  It is a wall hanging and features the use of a pack of 40 Bali fabric strips 2.5 inches wide usually sold as Bali Pops, Rainbows or similar.Measuring 60 inches square (1.52m), the pattern makes an attractive wall hanging using the Bargello technique, and can decorated with glass beads for the body and wings of the butterfly.

KoolKat Quilting is part of the Quilts, Stitches and Textiles Trail during Carnival of Flowers Week.  Kat’s Open Studio with her popular range of textile art and craft pieces (you can see a sneak preview of some of these at Laidley Quilt Show which finishes early this afternoon) will be featured.

True Blue wall hanging quilt

“True Blue” is another wall-hanging size quilt designed by Kat of KoolKat that will be featured in her quilt exhibition as part of the Quilts, Stitches and Textiles Trail during Carnival of Flowers week this month.  The quilt features the thread painting technique and was constructed as 9 separate mini-quilts before joining together as one piece.

Many different thread colours were used in free motion quilting to give a great effect of depth, light and shade.

The Art Nouveau Garden quilt.

The Art Nouveau Garden is a wall-hanging similar to Gather Ye Rosebuds in that it shows Kat’s love of batik and raw edge applique.  It is based on a work by the artist Alphonse Mucha.  This quilt was also designed as a block of the month.  The first version with the elegant figure in the centre panel proved somewhat challenging, hence a second version with a landscape panel was designed.

“The salty sea, an ancient land, Port Arthur, Salamanca, The wharves, Tall ships and rigging, gateway to the Antarctic, the museums and art galleries, Hobart at the epicentre – what a site”.

This is Kat’s artists statement for her “What a Site” quilt for the inaugural Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery Art Quilt Prize.  The quilt won Viewer’s Choice. It is a wall hanging 160 x 165 cm and features a range of techniques such as discharge dyeing and free motion quilting, and is based on a Google earth image of the museum site.

A Year in My Garden

A Year in My Garden is another of Kat’s award-winning quilts which will be exhibited as part of the Quilts, Stitches and Textiles Trail during Carnival of Flowers week next month.  This wall-sized quit records the flora and fauna observed by Kat  over a 12 months period outside her studio at Blue Mountain Heights.  Extensive embroidery is a feature of this piece.
